Chennai Super Kings have released Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana ahead of IPL 2026, with the franchise considering buying him back at the upcoming auction.
In a significant late move, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have decided to release Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana from their squad ahead of IPL 2026. According to ESPNcricinfo, CSK had been deliberating their plans regarding Pathirana, who was bought ahead of IPL 2023 and retained before the 2025 mega auction for INR 13 crore.
The news emerged on Saturday, just ahead of the IPL retention window closing at 3 PM.
Strong Start, But Injuries Affected Progress
Pathirana became an instant sensation in IPL 2023, when CSK won the title. With his slingy action and consistent 140-plus pace, he picked up 19 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of 8.01. Former CSK captain MS Dhoni had warned that the youngster needed careful management to ensure a long career.
His prediction proved accurate as Pathirana has faced multiple injury setbacks in recent years. After playing in the Asia Cup this September, Pathirana had a shortened IPL 2024 due to a hamstring injury and later withdrew midway from the SA20, where he represented Joburg Super Kings.
Dip in Form During IPL 2025
In IPL 2025, Pathirana was not at his best, claiming 13 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 10.13. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had publicly expressed concern, suggesting that tweaks made by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to Pathirana's release point were affecting his performance.
With his impact declining, CSK eventually made the decision to release him, though the door remains open for a potential buy-back at the auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi.
CSK's Auction Strategy
Pathirana has played exclusively for CSK in his IPL career so far, taking 47 wickets in 32 matches across three seasons at an average of 21.61 and economy of 8.68.
CSK are set to enter the auction with a large purse, having released several players including New Zealand stars Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Additionally, the franchise has traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson.
The restructuring signals a major rebuild for CSK as they prepare for IPL 2026.
